Overview
🐾 The Ultimate Cat Lover’s Tour of Japan – 2025! 🐾
If you adore cats and crave adventure, get ready for the purr-fect journey through Japan! This one-of-a-kind, first-ever cat-themed tour will whisk you away on an unforgettable trip blending Japan’s rich culture, stunning landscapes, and—of course—its deep-rooted love for all things feline.
The idea for this tour was born as I hiked through Japan in 2023, only to find myself constantly crossing paths with curious street cats, cat-themed guesthouses, and temples devoted to our whiskered friends. Everywhere I turned, there were kitties and cat lovers—so I knew I had to create a Cat Lady Tour of Japan!
🐱 Tokyo: A Cat Lover’s Playground
We’ll spend three thrilling days in Tokyo, the world’s biggest and most vibrant city, where you’ll dive into Japanese culture, indulge in exquisite cuisine, and explore its best cat-centric spots. Have you ever wondered about the origins of the lucky beckoning cat (Maneki-Neko)? You’ll learn all about this iconic feline and uncover Tokyo’s hidden gems dedicated to our furry companions.
🐱 Tohoku: Cats, Culture & Coastal Beauty
Next, we’ll leave the tourist crowds behind and take a bullet train to Tohoku, a breathtaking and lesser-known region of Japan. Here, we’ll visit a legendary cat island, where felines rule the streets and outnumber human residents, and stop by a local cat shelter to meet some adorable rescues. Between indulging in regional delicacies, soaking in hot springs, and gasping over stunning coastal views, we’ll also experience a few cultural surprises!
This tour isn’t just about cats (though, let’s be honest, they are the stars of the show 🐾). It’s about immersing yourself in Japan’s history, traditions, and cuisine—alongside a group of fellow cat lovers who just get it.
Let Neko the Lucky Cat beckon you to Japan for a once-in-a-lifetime cat-filled adventure. Spots are limited—don’t let this trip be the one that got away! 😻✈️

Is this tour for you?
Fitness: This tour requires a lot of walking around cities and villages. You should be comfortable being on your feet for long periods of time. You must be able to ride a bike for 12 miles – don’t worry – it is an e-bike. In Japanese onsens, it is required that you use them naked. They are always segregated between men and women. If you intend to use an onsen, you must follow their traditional rules.
Food: Japanese food is a big part of this tour. This tour is for the adventurous eater. We will be eating Japanese food every day. However, there are usually Western breakfast options, and plenty of snacks are available from 7-11. You should be open to trying new things, sometimes foods you aren’t familiar with and foods you don’t know. There will be an abundance of seafood on this tour; however, if you do not like seafood, we can find other options.
Dietary Requirements: If you have allergies to buckwheat, nuts, or seafood, we can accommodate these needs at every meal as long as we know in advance. Furthermore, we can also accommodate vegetarian (specifically lacto-ovo vegetarian) or pescatarian options for each meal with notice. Unfortunately, we cannot cater specifically to gluten-free, halal, kosher, or vegan options on this particular tour.
Weather: We will be there in autumn, and if we are lucky, we will have beautiful fall colors to enjoy in Tokyo and Tohoku. However – autumn leaves are tricky – so nothing is guaranteed. It will be cooler fall coat weather. You’ll want a heavier jacket at night (a light puffy would be perfect) and of course, rain/wind gear. And the onsens will feel so good!!
Daytime temperatures are typically 61–68°F (16–20°C) in the lowlands and 46–57°F (8–14°C) on high passes. Evenings are usually 39–54°F (4–12°C)
Extra Add-Ons
Extra Days in Tokyo—Even though this tour doesn’t include Tokyo, most guests will fly into and out of Tokyo. So why not spend a few days in the World’s largest city? I’m more than happy to help you organize your time there at some off-the-beaten-path sites and my favorite neighborhoods! Just ask me, and we can organize a great extra few days in this vibrant, fascinating, quirky city!
If you have extra time, I suggest that you explore a few other regions of Japan. In addition to a couple of days in Tokyo, I would also recommend going to Shikoku Island, Kyoto, or Hokkaido. Here are a few ideas. However, I’m happy to talk to you and help you plan an extra week in Japan, seeing the popular and lesser-known sites!
Japan Rail Pass—If you want to visit other regions of Japan, then I highly recommend getting a Japan Rail Pass. These are special passes/deals for tourists visiting Japan. These passes will allow you to use unlimited transportation options around the country, including airport transfers and fast Shinkansen trains (including the one that will get you to the start of this MCT tour)! They are offered at different times and in various regions. You can learn more about Japan rail passes here.
